NZ South Island Pics

Straight out of Christchurch and on the road to Kaikoura

Looking for the seal colonies around Kaikoura...

...And finding them

First a sperm whale at Kaikoura

Then a humpback. Notice the sunny weather and total lack of antarctic conditions...

Ten-a-penny dusky dolphins at Kaikoura

Driving from Kaikoura through Blenheim, and not stopping to wine taste. Shame.

Kaiteriteri on the way to Abel Tasman park. Gorgeous orange gold sand.

Gateway to Abel Tasman coastline via kayak

Our own island for the afternoon. Crystal clear water but very few fish except a big ray I tried to pat by mistake.

Paddle? Someone has to take photographs.

From Nelson towards the west coast

Too chilly to swim but nice to sit on a clifftop and stare out towards, well, nowhere really

The pancake rocks and assorted blowholes

Crazy milky blue water colour in all the streams coming down from the glaciers

Bruce Bay coastal road - an interesting drive at high tide

Did we mention crystal clear lakes?

And again

And more of them

And some quite impressive hilly bits on the way to...

...The Franz Joseph Glacier

The more impressive Fox glacier was only 20km up the road

Lake Hawea, crystal clear stuff again

And once more for luck

Queenstown is amazingly pretty and very expensive

Lake Wanaka

Heading out of Queenstown towards Te Anau

On the (sodden) road to Milford sound.

The scale of these things is hard to grasp. Most of the peaks are around 2km straight up

All together now, aaahhhh....

Mitre Peak at the entrance to the Sound

Unfortunately Milford Sound was the death of all our photographic gear so the last leg was shot on a disposable camera. Sod's Law dictated that the drive out of Queenstown up the Kawarau gorge and on to Mount Cook would be the most photogenic couple of days in the whole of a highly photogenic trip. Heartbreaking it was.
